Which cars can I drive as a new driver?

Cars must meet both limits: no more than 105 kW of power and no more than 75 kW per tonne of unladen weight. Both thresholds are inclusive.

Three years after obtaining a category B licence, if obtained from 14 December 2024. For an earlier category B licence, the standard power restriction lasted one year and has already ended.

Advertised peak power may differ from the power shown on the registration document. This tool uses manufacturer guidance or document values rather than judging a car by its advertised horsepower.

The power restriction does not apply when a person acting as an instructor sits beside you, is no older than 65, and holds a valid licence in the same category obtained at least ten years ago, or a higher category. Specific exceptions also apply to vehicles serving people with disabilities.
