How can I tell whether a road with a toll booth is a motorway?

A toll or toll booth alone does not establish that a road is legally a motorway. Check its classification, start and end signs, and access rules for that section.

The Code and signs establish the classification

Article 2 of the Italian Highway Code defines road categories and their characteristics. Article 175 attaches access restrictions to particular classes, including motorways. A toll is a way to manage or fund a road; it does not itself establish the legal class or which vehicles may use it.

Look for the motorway start and end signs and read the information before entering. For a particular road, check official details from its owner or operator, especially if signs appear inconsistent. A motorway may be free of charge, and a road with a toll should not be classified solely because a booth is present.

Apply the rules to your vehicle

Once you identify the road, check whether Article 175 permits your vehicle and whether its technical, age and licence requirements are met. For combustion motorcycles, the general threshold in force since 14 December 2024 is at least 120 cc with an adult rider; electric motorcycles require at least 6 kW and an adult rider. Other vehicle categories have different rules.

For example, a toll route marked as a motorway remains subject to the Code's exclusions even if its toll booths are automatic or barrier-free. Do not infer access from a commercial map.
