Licence categories
6,000 kg truck: is C1 enough or do you need category C?
A 6,000 kg truck may fit C1, which covers over 3,500 up to 7,500 kg, subject to passenger and vehicle classification limits.
For a truck with a maximum authorised mass of 6,000 kg, C1 may be enough if it is not a D1/D passenger vehicle and is designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver. Category C covers heavier vehicles beyond C1’s range, subject to its own passenger and classification limits.
C1 covers the range up to 7,500 kg
Category C1 covers motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and no more than 7,500 kg, other than D1/D vehicles, designed for up to eight passengers besides the driver. A 6,000 kg truck is therefore within the C1 mass range if it also meets the other category requirements. Category C covers vehicles over 3,500 kg beyond C1’s upper limit, with the applicable passenger and classification conditions.
Do not use the truck’s empty weight or the cargo on one trip: the licence check uses the maximum authorised mass in its registration document. Check passenger seats and vehicle class too. C1 allows a trailer up to 750 kg; for a heavier trailer, assess C1E or another category.
Check code 97 and intended use
A C1 licence can also carry code 97, which limits driving to vehicles not subject to tachograph installation and use rules. If the truck is subject to those rules, C1 with code 97 is not enough; a suitable category without that restriction must be checked. Code 97 does not change the mass range, but it narrows the vehicles covered.
The licence concerns the vehicle. If you drive professionally to carry goods, separately check whether the activity requires a CQC and whether an exemption applies. CQC is not a driving category, and C1 does not replace it.
Example
A truck registered at 6,000 kg, with two passenger seats besides the driver and no trailer, may fit C1 if its classification confirms the category. If your licence has code 97, verify the truck is not subject to tachograph rules. With an authorised 1,000 kg trailer, C1 alone does not cover the whole combination; check C1E and the authorised masses.

Frequently asked questions
Does every 6,000 kg truck require category C?

Can C1 with code 97 cover a truck subject to tachograph rules?
No. Code 97 limits the licence to vehicles not subject to those rules.
