Electric truck: when does B reach 4,250 kg, and when is C1 needed?

B up to 4,250 kg is a narrow exception for certain alternative-fuel goods vehicles without a trailer; otherwise assess C1 or C.

Category B can extend above 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg only for certain alternative-fuel goods vehicles without a trailer, if the technical conditions are met and the driver has held B for at least two years. Other vehicles above 3,500 kg normally require C1 up to 7,500 kg or C above that.

The B exception does not cover every electric truck

Article 116 provides a narrow exception for certain alternative-fuel vehicles without a trailer that are used to carry goods. Their maximum authorised mass may exceed 3,500 kg but not 4,250 kg only if the excess comes from the propulsion system, does not increase payload capacity and the driver has held category B for at least two years. An electric powertrain by itself is not enough.

Check the registered vehicle class and use, maximum authorised mass, absence of a trailer and technical documents proving the conditions. A motorhome or passenger vehicle does not automatically qualify. If any condition is missing or undocumented, use the ordinary licence categories.

When to assess C1

Outside the exception, C1 covers vehicles above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, other than D1/D vehicles and subject to the passenger limit. Above 7,500 kg, or where the vehicle does not fit C1, assess C. A trailer adds another check: C1 includes a trailer up to 750 kg; for heavier trailers, consider C1E or another category.

Do not confuse the driving licence with professional qualifications. If goods are carried professionally, check separately whether CQC is required and whether an exemption applies. The B mass exception does not by itself settle the qualification requirement, which depends on the actual work and relevant rules.

Example

An electric goods truck authorised at 4,100 kg, without a trailer, can be assessed under the B exception only if documents prove the propulsion and payload conditions and the driver has held B for two years. A diesel truck at 4,100 kg does not fit that exception and needs at least C1. An electric vehicle at 4,600 kg is beyond the exception’s ceiling.

Frequently asked questions

Can every electric truck up to 4,250 kg be driven with B?

No. It must be a qualifying goods vehicle without a trailer, meet the technical conditions and be driven by someone who has held B for at least two years.

If the exception does not apply, what licence covers 6,000 kg?

C1 normally covers up to 7,500 kg if the vehicle class and passenger limits fit.
