Licence categories
Motorhome over 7,500 kg: which licence do you need?
A motorhome above 7,500 kg normally requires category C if its passenger capacity and classification do not place it in D1 or D.
For a motorhome with a maximum authorised mass above 7,500 kg, category C is normally required if it is classified as a motor vehicle for no more than eight passengers besides the driver and does not fall under D1/D. Check its registered mass, seats and any trailer.
The vehicle exceeds the C1 range
Category C1 stops at a maximum authorised mass of 7,500 kg. A motor caravan above that limit does not fit C1; category C covers vehicles over 3,500 kg, other than D1/D, designed for no more than eight passengers besides the driver. The motorhome’s actual weight on a particular day does not change its authorised maximum in the registration document.
Check the approved vehicle category and seats. If it is designed for more than eight passengers besides the driver, D1 or D may be relevant. The commercial label “motorhome” does not replace the official registration data. The licence must match the vehicle as registered.
Trailer, codes and vehicle use
Category C allows a trailer with a maximum authorised mass up to 750 kg. For a heavier trailer, assess CE and the authorised masses of the combination. The licence does not increase the motorhome’s technical towing capacity; check the registration document for permitted trailer mass, vertical coupling load and restrictions.
Read any harmonised codes on the licence and the vehicle’s conditions too. If the motorhome has been modified, imported or has inconsistent data, ask the Motor Vehicle Office to clarify before driving. Registration, insurance and roadworthiness remain separate from the driving category.
Example
A motorhome registered at 8,200 kg with six passenger seats besides the driver exceeds C1 and falls within the C range to assess, subject to other details. If it tows a caravan authorised at 1,000 kg, CE and towbar compatibility must also be checked. A scale reading of 7,300 kg does not make C1 sufficient for a vehicle registered at 8,200 kg.

Frequently asked questions
Can I use C1 for an 8,000 kg motorhome if it is unloaded?
No. The category uses maximum authorised mass, so above 7,500 kg category C must be assessed.
Is category C enough if the motorhome tows a heavy trailer?
Not always. C includes a trailer up to 750 kg; a heavier trailer may require CE.
