Professional qualifications
CAP KB: what is it used for in relation to taxis and private hire vehicles?
The CAP KB is a professional certificate that must be assessed alongside a driving licence, authorisation and local regulations for taxis and private hire vehicles.
The KB professional qualification certificate relates to the professional driving of taxis and chauffeur-driven hire cars in the cases specified. It does not replace a driving licence, licence or local authorisation.
A qualification within a chain of requirements
The CAP KB is a professional certificate associated with specific driving activities, including taxis and chauffeur-driven hire cars, in accordance with the applicable regulations. However, the certificate alone is not sufficient to work: you must hold the relevant category of driving licence, a valid KB where required, and authorisation to operate the service. Licences, registrations and requirements for taxis or chauffeur-driven hire cars may also depend on local regulations and the specific nature of the business.
Before enrolling on a course, clarify what service you intend to provide, what vehicle you will use, and what requirements the local council or relevant authority stipulates. The MIT publishes information on CAPs and associated points; the local authority manages licensing and authorisation matters. Do not confuse your personal driving licence with the licence required to provide a commercial service.
- Check your driving licence, CAP and operating licence as separate elements.
- Consult the local authority regarding requirements for taxis or chauffeur-driven car hire.
- Check expiry dates and required categories before starting work.
Taxis and chauffeur-driven car hire are not the same type of authorisation
Taxis and chauffeur-driven car hire are services regulated differently, with specific operating conditions and authorisations. The CAP KB may be a personal requirement, but it does not, on its own, grant a taxi licence, a chauffeur-driven car hire authorisation or the right to use a vehicle for that service. Local authority regulations may specify procedures, registers, the availability of licences and transport arrangements.
If you are already working in the sector, check that your documentation is consistent with your current role and keep a record of any correspondence from the relevant authorities. If you wish to set up a business, first ask the relevant authority for an up-to-date list of the qualifications required, so that you do not incur the cost of a course without having checked the other requirements. For information on CAP points and regulations, please consult the dedicated MIT page.
Preparing for the theory test
For taxis and private hire vehicles, also check whether registration on the drivers’ register is required and what conditions apply in the relevant region or local authority. The process may involve exams, personal requirements and the availability of licences that are not solely dependent on the CAP. If the service involves different types of vehicles or transport outside the municipality, ask how the rules apply. A list of the required qualifications, confirmed by the local authority, helps to avoid confusion between individual training and business licensing.

Frequently asked questions
Is the CAP KB sufficient to work as a taxi driver?
No. You also need a driving licence and the licence or authorisation required for the service, in addition to any local requirements.
Are the KB certificate and a Category B driving licence the same qualification?
No. A Category B licence authorises the holder to drive a specific category of vehicles; the KB certificate is a separate professional qualification.
