How should I distribute trailer weight to reduce sway?

Load and secure the trailer within its payload, axle and hitch limits, following the vehicle maker’s instructions.

To reduce sway risk, load the trailer evenly and stably, keep heavy items low and secured, and respect payload, axle and permitted vertical-load limits. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions: shifting everything to the front or rear can make the combination less stable.

Distribution and restraint both matter

Poor loading can make a trailer oscillate, unload the car’s rear axle or put too much force on the hitch. Start with the documents and technical limits: maximum authorised mass, payload, axle loads and vertical load allowed by the car, coupling device and trailer. The lowest applicable limit controls. Keep the centre of gravity low and near the axles, with no left-to-right imbalance.

Secure objects against movement under braking, turning or acceleration. Use suitable anchor points, check that straps and covers cannot loosen, and keep lights and plates visible. Do not put all the weight at the back: a rear-heavy load can encourage sway; too much weight on the drawbar can exceed its rating and affect the car’s handling.

Example: heavy equipment is piled at the rear of a trailer. Its total mass may still be below the maximum, yet the distribution can make towing unstable. Reorganise the load according to the manufacturer’s instructions, secure it and measure vertical load. Then confirm that axle and combination limits are respected.

Recheck after loading

After loading, verify total mass, axle distribution and vertical load with suitable equipment. If you cannot obtain a reliable measurement, ask a weighing facility or manufacturer how to check it. Inspect straps again after a short distance and whenever the configuration changes.

If the trailer begins to sway, avoid abrupt steering or sudden braking. Ease off speed gradually and stop in a safe place to identify the cause. Driving corrections cannot make a non-compliant load safe. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you revise cargo and road-safety quizzes; the limits for your setup come from its technical documents.

Frequently asked questions

Should I put all the load close to the hitch for stability?

No. Vertical load must stay within its limit, but weight should be distributed as the manufacturer directs, without imbalance.

If total mass is under the maximum, is the load automatically safe?

No. You must also meet payload, axle, hitch-load, restraint and distribution requirements.
