Protruding load: when may a vehicle not enter a motorway?

A load must stay within applicable dimensions and be secured. Article 175 bars loads that exceed limits or are not firmly fixed.

Do not enter a motorway with a load that exceeds applicable size limits or is not firmly secured. Article 175 works alongside the load rules in Article 164 and vehicle dimensions in Article 61.

A protruding load must meet the load rules

Tying an item down is not enough by itself. The Code governs how far a load may extend, how it must be marked and how it must be arranged so it cannot fall, block the driver's view or endanger others. Article 175 bars motorway access when a vehicle carries a load that is not firmly secured or exceeds the established limits.

Measure the loaded vehicle, not just the object. Article 61 sets dimensional limits, while Article 164 requires a safe, stable arrangement and proper marking. Rear projections have specific rules for extent and marking. Do not improvise with a rope or cover if an item's shape or weight could shift while driving.

Check before entering the ramp

Check restraints, weight distribution, overall dimensions, visibility of the plate and lights, and any permit needed for an exceptional load. If the load is unstable or exceeds a limit, stop somewhere safe and fix it before continuing. The right driving licence does not make an unlawful load acceptable.

For example, a board projecting within the permitted limits and marked correctly may be carried under the general rules; a ladder that moves or covers the lights is unsafe even on a short trip. Check restrictions for the road too. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you practise exam quizzes and review mistakes about loads and traffic; measure and inspect the actual vehicle before travel.

Frequently asked questions

If a protruding load is tied down, can I enter?

Only if it meets all dimensional, projection, marking and securing rules. A rope alone does not prove it is stable or permitted.

Does the correct licence make an oversized load legal?

No. A licence covers the driver; dimensions, load security and any required permits are separate requirements.
