Vehicle documents
Auxiliary trailer or trailer: how can I tell from the documents?
An Italian carrello appendice is linked to the towing vehicle; an registered trailer has its own vehicle documents.
Do not rely on the informal name. Check the official documents: a carrello appendice is treated as part of the towing vehicle and recorded in its documents, while an immatriculated trailer is a separate vehicle with its own identification and registration. The official classification determines the rules that apply.
Look for the registration and identification
An Italian carrello appendice and an ordinary trailer are not interchangeable terms. The auxiliary trailer is linked to a specific towing vehicle under its own procedure, and its details are recorded with that vehicle. It is not an independent trailer simply because it has wheels, a coupling or space for luggage. An immatriculated trailer is a separate vehicle, identified by its own registration documents and plate.
Compare the identification plate, any registration plate and the vehicle documents. For the carrello appendice, look for the required note linking it to the car; for a trailer, check its separate registration and mass data. Do not decide from its shape or size. Law 177/2024 amended some provisions about auxiliary trailers, including cases involving motorcycles, but that does not make the two legal categories identical or remove technical requirements.
Example: a seller calls a small trailer an ‘auxiliary trailer’. If it has its own registration and the car documents do not show the required link, treat the official documents as decisive, not the seller’s description. If identification or records are missing, resolve its status before using it on the road.
Classification determines separate obligations
After identifying the vehicle, check its licence category, authorised masses, speed limits and equipment requirements. For an immatriculated trailer, the licence uses its authorised maximum mass and the relevant Article 116 thresholds. An auxiliary trailer may follow specific rules connected to its towing vehicle. In both cases, the car’s approved towing mass, hitch and load limits still matter.
If the documents are incomplete or inconsistent, contact the motor vehicle authority or a qualified professional who can check the approval record. Do not use the actual weight to change the legal classification. Frequently asked questions
Does a small trailer automatically count as a carrello appendice?
No. Its official approval and documents determine the classification, not just its size or intended use.
Does a carrello appendice always have its own documents like a trailer?
No. It is linked to the towing vehicle through the required records; an immatriculated trailer is documented as a separate vehicle.
