Road signs
A motorway sign says 150 cc: does the new 120 cc threshold apply?
Since 14 December 2024, adults may use motorcycles from 120 cc; still check signs and restrictions for that road section.
Law 177/2024 introduced a national exception from 14 December 2024 for adult riders on combustion motorcycles of at least 120 cc. An old 150 cc reference alone does not settle whether a specific local restriction applies: identify the section and verify the relevant measure.
The Code now provides a 120 cc threshold
Law 25 November 2024, No. 177, in force since 14 December 2024, amended Article 175. The provision now allows motorcycles of at least 120 cc on motorways and main extra-urban roads when ridden by an adult. For electric motorcycles, the threshold is at least 6 kW. This technical access rule does not replace the licence required for the motorcycle.
A 150 cc sign may reflect older guidance or refer to a particular measure. Do not ignore it without understanding where it is placed and which section it governs; at the same time, do not apply an outdated national threshold instead of the current Code. Note the sign's location and wording and check whether an order or current road restriction applies.
Check age and road classification too
The 120 cc threshold applies to motorcycles, not mopeds. The rider must be an adult, hold a licence for the motorcycle and comply with restrictions for the vehicle and road. For a ring road, first identify its legal classification: the exception concerns motorways and main extra-urban roads, plus other roads designated by decree and signed.
For example, an adult riding a 125 cc combustion motorcycle meets the general threshold. If a specific sign at the entrance says otherwise, determine whether that restriction is still valid and which section it covers before entering. Frequently asked questions
Is 150 cc still the general threshold?
No. Since 14 December 2024, Article 175 provides a threshold of at least 120 cc for combustion motorcycles with an adult rider. Any specific restriction still needs checking.
Can I ignore a sign showing 150 cc?
Not without identifying its context and current validity. The law changed the general rule, but a specific restriction should be checked before entering.
