Professional qualifications
Foreign driving licence and CQC: how do I check recognition in Italy?
For a foreign CQC, check the issuing country, residence, validity and MIT procedure; the licence and CQC are separate documents.
A foreign licence with a CQC is not automatically accepted in Italy in every situation. Recognition depends on the issuing country, residence and the required conversion or registration procedure. The driving licence and professional CQC are separate documents. MIT has specific steps for some EU/EEA cases; do not presume automatic recognition for a non-EU title.
The foreign licence and professional qualification are different
The driving licence shows which vehicle categories you may drive; the CQC certifies professional qualification for goods or passenger transport. The fact that both documents were issued by the same country does not mean they follow the same recognition process in Italy. MIT instructions cover certain EU/EEA licence holders with a foreign CQC: in some cases, a person who establishes normal residence in Italy must first convert the driving licence and then apply for an Italian CQC. The required steps depend on the applicant and the documents held.
For licences and CQCs issued outside the EU/EEA, do not assume that an agreement to convert the driving licence also recognises the professional qualification. MIT notes that extra-EU licence-conversion agreements generally do not cover professional qualifications automatically; CQC conversion or issuance may require additional conditions and confirmation from the foreign authority. Check that the CQC is valid, the licence covers the vehicle category, and the country and residence details match the MIT procedure.
For example, a driver resident in Italy with an EU licence and CQC issued in another Member State should not assume that presenting the foreign card is enough. Under the relevant MIT procedure, the licence may need to be converted first, followed by an application for the CQC. A holder of an extra-EU licence must check separately whether the agreement with that country includes CQC; convertibility of the driving licence alone does not settle the professional title.
Prepare a verification with the Motorizzazione
Gather copies of both sides of the licence and CQC, the issuing country and dates, proof of residence and any official translations requested. Contact the competent Motorizzazione and ask which application applies before starting professional work. If you need to drive in the meantime, confirm which titles are valid during the transition and what limits apply; do not assume the CQC remains valid simply because the driving licence does.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common rules through chapters, exam quizzes and error review. It does not assess foreign documents or certify CQC recognition; that depends on the documents and the official procedure for the issuing country.

Frequently asked questions
Is an EU-issued CQC automatically valid in Italy?
Do not assume the foreign document alone is sufficient in every situation. Residence, licence conversion and the applicable procedure matter; follow MIT instructions for your case.
If I convert a non-EU licence, is the CQC converted too?
Not necessarily. Driving-licence conversion agreements do not automatically include the professional qualification. Check CQC recognition separately.
