How to obtain the CQC: initial training and examination
To obtain a CQC, you must complete the required initial training and pass the examination; the course, requirements and exemptions depend on the route.
The CQC is obtained through a training course and an examination for either goods or passenger transport, depending on the qualification chosen. Check the current requirements, duration and arrangements with an authorised provider and the MIT instructions.
Choosing the type of qualification
First decide whether you need a CQC for goods transport, passenger transport or both. The choice depends on the professional service you will provide, not simply on whether you hold a category C or D licence. The CQC is additional to your driving licence and must match the vehicle category and activity. An authorised training centre can check your existing qualifications and point you to the right route.
Initial qualification requires attendance at the course set out in the rules and passing the examination. There are standard and accelerated routes with different conditions, including minimum ages for some professional categories. Do not confuse the CQC examination with the driving licence theory test: the syllabuses and procedures are separate. Before enrolling, ask about the timetable, hours, documents, entry requirements and examination arrangements for the specific qualification.
After completing the course and passing the examination, check that the CQC has been issued and that its category and validity are correct. Keep the certificate and check how the qualification is shown on your driving licence or driver documents. Professional driving may also require the relevant licence category, and rules on driving time, rest periods and transport still apply.
- First decide what you will transport: goods, passengers or both.
- Enrol only with an authorised provider for the relevant course.
- Confirm the requirements, course, examination and documents with the centre and the Motorizzazione office.
- Check that the qualification has been issued and is valid before starting the service.
Preparing without confusing the different routes
Ask the centre to distinguish clearly between initial training, the examination, any accelerated route and periodic training for renewal. Duration and organisation depend on the CQC type and the rules in force; do not rely on figures from an old course or one for a different category. Fees are set or quoted by individual providers and may vary, so ask for an up-to-date estimate that separates course and examination costs.
For the CQC, use the syllabus and learning materials provided by the authorised training centre: a driving theory quiz app does not replace the professional course or the CQC examination.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you study category C or D driving theory with chapters and timed practice tests; for the CQC, you must follow the authorised provider's course and syllabus.
Frequently asked questions
Are the driving licence theory quizzes enough to obtain the CQC?
No. The CQC has a separate professional procedure, with initial training and the relevant examination for the applicable route.
Can I choose between the goods and passenger CQC freely?
Your choice must match the service and vehicles you will drive. If you expect to carry both goods and passengers, ask the authorised provider which qualification or extension you need.
