Motorcycle test on an automatic: what restriction appears on the licence?
If your practical motorcycle test uses an automatic, code 78 limits you to automatic vehicles in that licence category.
If you take the A1, A2 or A practical motorcycle test on a vehicle with a transmission other than manual, the MIT provides for harmonised code 78 next to the category obtained. This restriction excludes manual vehicles in that same category.
What code 78 means
Code 78 is a harmonised restriction showing that the practical test was taken on a vehicle without a manual transmission. On its A2/A page, the Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) states that candidates who pass on an automatic may drive only automatic vehicles. The MIT examination circular confirms that the code is recorded beside the category concerned. It does not ban one particular model; it applies to manual vehicles in that licence category.
For motorcycle tests, the MIT treats a vehicle as manual when it has a clutch lever or pedal used to start, stop or change gear. An automatic transmission can therefore lead to the code even if the vehicle has selectors or riding modes. Ask the driving school to check how the test motorcycle is classified and what restriction will be recorded. This rule concerns the practical licence test; it is separate from lessons and theory quizzes.
For example, if you take and pass the practical A2 test on an automatic motorcycle, code 78 restricts your A2 entitlement to automatic vehicles. If you also want to ride manual motorcycles, ask before the test which vehicle and procedure allow you to obtain the category without this restriction. Do not assume the code can be removed immediately or by a statement from the driving school; check the official procedure.
Check your document after the test
When you receive your licence, check the reverse and the line for the new category. If code 78 appears and you believe it was added by mistake, contact the Motorizzazione promptly with your test documents. Do not ride a manual vehicle on the assumption that the code will not be checked. The restriction may apply to one category and does not automatically extend to every category on the licence.
