When is chartwork part of the boating licence exam?

Chartwork is part of the theoretical boating examination. The DM 323/2021 distinguishes a chartwork quiz for the within-12-mile licence from a longer chart exercise for the unlimited-distance qualification, with different question formats and materials.

For the within-12-mile examination, the ministerial syllabus provides a quiz on nautical chartwork. Candidates must answer the required number of questions correctly within the allotted time. This is separate from the general theory quiz and may be a prerequisite to continuing the examination, so check the current instructions issued by the examination office.

For an unlimited-distance licence, DM 323/2021 provides a chartwork test with four independent questions. At least three must be solved correctly within 60 minutes. Candidates must bring the specified unmarked nautical charts 5/D and 42/D and the permitted instruments. Do not confuse the two formats: the extended chart exercise belongs to the unlimited route.

Prepare the correct charts and instruments

Check the office notice before the examination for the approved chart edition and equipment. Practise position, course, distance and time calculations on a clean chart, and ensure that your tools are permitted. Markings or exercises already drawn on a chart may make it unacceptable for the test.
