Which knots should you know for the boating examination?

The D1 syllabus lists specific knots; check the qualification and syllabus that apply to your examination.

The nautical knot list depends on the examination route. The D1 syllabus explicitly names the bowline, clove hitch, cleat hitch and rolling hitch. Do not assume that this list applies identically to every licence category or practical examination.

Use the syllabus for your exact examination

For the D1 licence, the official syllabus names four knots: bowline, clove hitch, cleat hitch and rolling hitch. Candidates should know what each knot is for and be able to tie it neatly when requested. The list comes from the D1 rules; applicants for other categories should consult the programme and instructions issued by their competent examination office.

A knot is useful only when it suits the load and can be checked. The bowline forms a fixed loop, the clove hitch secures a line around a post, the cleat hitch makes a line fast to a cleat, and the rolling hitch can grip another line under tension. Learn the names used by your examiner and practise with the kind of rope used during lessons.

Practise a secure, inspectable finish

At an examination, work calmly and leave the knot easy to inspect. Keep the standing part and working end clear, avoid crossings that weaken the arrangement and check that the line cannot slip under the expected direction of pull. Demonstrate the requested knot rather than substituting a familiar one with a similar purpose.

For example, a cleat hitch should lie around the cleat in a recognisable pattern and finish with a secure turn; simply looping the rope over the horn does not make it reliable.
