BE practical test: how heavy must the exam trailer be?
MIT requires a trailer rated for at least 1,000 kg and presented with at least 800 kg actual mass.
For the Italian BE practical test, MIT specifies two distinct trailer thresholds: a maximum authorised mass of at least 1,000 kg and an actual total mass of at least 800 kg when presented for the exam. The combination must also meet the current requirements for total authorised mass, speed, load space and the training vehicle.
Rated mass and actual mass are different
The trailer’s authorised limit must be at least 1,000 kg. On the exam day, its actual total mass must be at least 800 kg. The first figure is a legal rating in the trailer documents; the second is its real weight in the configuration presented. A trailer rated at 1,000 kg but weighing 750 kg at the test meets the first threshold and misses the second.
The MIT page also describes a B-category towing vehicle and trailer combination with a maximum authorised mass over 4,250 kg and below 7,000 kg, capable of at least 100 km/h, with a closed trailer load space of specified dimensions. The car used as the towing vehicle must have dual controls for at least clutch and brake, and an authorised driving instructor must sit beside the candidate. Check the current page because exam specifications can be updated.
These are conditions for the exam vehicle. They do not replace the everyday BE licence calculation: that category covers a B vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer, with the trailer’s maximum authorised mass no more than 3,500 kg, when the authorised total exceeds 4,250 kg. The car’s own technical towing limit still applies after qualification.
Check the booked vehicle before the test
Ask the school or examination office for the documents of the combination. Verify the trailer’s rating, how its actual mass will reach 800 kg without exceeding any limit, the total authorised mass, its speed capability and the dimensions of the closed load space. Do not rely on a verbal statement that the trailer is ‘heavy enough’ when the two mass figures differ.
Practise reversing and controlling the combination with the instructor. The exam assesses practical ability; studying quiz questions alone cannot prepare you to handle a trailer. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review category and mass rules through quizzes and error review, while practical BE manoeuvres must be trained with an instructor on an appropriate vehicle.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise licence categories and mass rules; BE manoeuvres need guided practice in the exam vehicle.
Frequently asked questions
Must the exam trailer have an actual mass of 1,000 kg?
No. Its authorised mass limit must be at least 1,000 kg; its actual total mass at the exam must be at least 800 kg.
Does an 800 kg actual mass override the trailer documents?
No. The actual mass must meet the exam minimum without exceeding authorised masses or other technical limits.
