CE practical test: what truck and trailer are required?

The CE exam combination must meet the current MIT minimum mass, length, width, speed and equipment rules.

For an Italian CE practical test, MIT requires a suitable category C vehicle and trailer combination meeting minimum mass, length, width, speed and equipment specifications. The published minimums include a 20-tonne limit mass, 14 m overall length, 2.40 m width and 80 km/h speed capability. The exact exam vehicle must meet the full current specification.

Requirements for the exam vehicle

The MIT C1E–CE page describes the CE test vehicle as a category C vehicle paired with a trailer. The authorised limit mass must be at least 20 tonnes; overall length at least 14 m; width at least 2.40 m; and the vehicles must be capable of at least 80 km/h. The trailer must be at least 7.5 m long and have a closed load space with dimensions related to the towing vehicle. The page also specifies ABS, at least eight forward gears, a tachograph and a minimum actual total mass; consult the current text for each condition.

These are exam-vehicle requirements. They are not a general description of every CE combination that may be used on the road. CE covers a category C vehicle with a trailer or semi-trailer over 750 kg; actual road use is still subject to the vehicle’s approved masses and dimensions, technical approval and cargo rules.

Example: a test combination has a limit mass above 20 tonnes and can reach 80 km/h, but its overall length is 13.8 m. It meets those two figures but misses the published 14 m length minimum. Ask the driving school for the booked vehicle’s documents and compare each value with the current MIT page rather than relying on a verbal summary.

Confirm the booked vehicle with the school

Before scheduling the test, check the truck and trailer documents: limit and actual mass, length, width, design speed, ABS, gearbox and closed load space. The actual-mass requirement can differ from the authorised mass, and both must be satisfied without exceeding any vehicle limit. Use the ministry page current on the exam date because technical requirements can be updated.

The CE test assesses practical ability and behaviour with the combination. Practise manoeuvres with an instructor on a suitable vehicle and ask which checks and stages the official programme requires. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps with theory and category rules; it cannot replace practical CE training.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise category theory; the CE practical test requires instructor-led practice in a suitable vehicle.

Frequently asked questions

Does the 20,000 kg figure mean actual weight on exam day?

MIT distinguishes limit mass and actual total mass. Check the current page for the minimum required for each value.

Can I use exam-vehicle requirements to decide if I need CE?

No. Those describe the test vehicle. The CE category depends on the towing vehicle class and the trailer’s maximum authorised mass.
