A/A2 practical test: how should I prepare for emergency braking?

Practise braking on the course with an instructor, protective equipment and a suitable motorcycle.

For the A or A2 practical test, braking on the course requires control of speed, path and the available stopping area on the exam motorcycle. Prepare with an instructor, protection and a suitable area; do not improvise hard braking on an open road. The test follows the ministerial programme and the layout communicated by the office.

Practise braking in controlled conditions

Before the test, have the motorcycle checked and learn its brakes, throttle response, tyres and riding position. Your instructor should explain the entry speed, path, start signal and available space for the official exercise. Wear a helmet and protective equipment; do not practise emergency stops on a public road just to imitate the course.

During the manoeuvre, keep your gaze in the direction of travel and follow the technique taught for that motorcycle. Abrupt input or a rigid posture can affect stability and trajectory. If the surface is dirty, wet or the area is not clear, stop the practice and wait until the instructor confirms safe conditions. Stopping distance depends on speed and vehicle, so do not rely on a number learned out of context.

Example: during practice you realise you are entering too quickly for the marked space. Do not try to compensate with sudden braking. Tell your instructor, stop at the agreed point and repeat at the intended speed after clarifying the sequence.

Check the motorcycle and test procedure

The MIT page lists minimum motorcycle characteristics for A2 and A; the transmission chosen can also affect the code on the licence. Ask your school whether the motorcycle and test area meet current requirements and which exercises are scheduled at your centre.

It can help with common rules and theory quizzes, but preparation and protective gear for the practical test require instructor-led lessons. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with category B quizzes and mistake review.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers quizzes, chapter-based study and error review on common road rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can I practise a hard stop alone in a car park?

No. Practise with an instructor, suitable area, checked motorcycle and protective equipment; do not improvise in an unprepared space.

Is stopping distance always the same?

No. It varies with speed, road surface, tyres and the motorcycle’s condition. Follow the programme and technique taught for the exam vehicle.
