Category A practical test: how should I handle the slalom and obstacle?

In the Italian category A practical test, slalom and obstacle avoidance check motorcycle control during manoeuvres at different speeds. Look toward the clear path, maintain balance and position, and follow the official course instructions. Do not rely on isolated distances or corrections from videos: practise the course with an instructor and protective equipment.

Use your gaze and follow the marked course

Before starting, listen to the instructions and observe the entry and exit points. In a slow section, look beyond the cone you are passing and guide the motorcycle along the path without fixating on the obstacle. Keep to the speed required by the programme, use the controls smoothly and maintain a stable posture; a sudden correction can widen your line or reduce control.

Avoiding an obstacle is a different manoeuvre from the slalom: set direction and speed according to the course and examiner’s instructions, rather than choosing a last-second path yourself. The area must be clear and suitable. If you notice a problem or did not understand the signal, stop safely and ask before restarting.

Example: in practice you enter the slalom too quickly and look at the next cone only at the last moment. Do not make your movements faster to recover. With your instructor, repeat at a controlled speed, focusing on the exit point and a continuous line of sight. Move to the next exercise once you can control the route.

Prepare on the course and exam motorcycle

MIT specifies minimum requirements for the exam motorcycle and the test type; using an automatic transmission may result in code 78. Confirm that the motorcycle is suitable for category A and practise with the same controls and setup. Wear a helmet and protective clothing, and do not practise alone on an improvised route.
