Category B practical test: which car controls should I know?

Learn the exam car’s controls without losing attention to the road and follow the examiner’s requests.

For the category B practical test, you must know how to use the controls in the car you are driving, such as lights, indicators, wipers and demisting. Their position and operation vary by model. Familiarise yourself with the exam car and ask your instructor which checks may be requested. Do not look away from the road for a long time while searching for a control.

Learn the model before setting off

While the car is parked, locate the indicators, lights, wipers, washer, rear-window heater, fog lights if fitted and essential adjustments. Not all cars use the same symbols or button locations: controls may be on a stalk, dashboard or multimedia screen. Ask your instructor to show you the relevant controls in the exam vehicle and practise operating them without confusion.

Pre-drive checks can involve equipment and vehicle condition, but do not assume there is an identical checklist for every exam. If you need to use wipers or lights while moving, keep your eyes on the road and use a control you have already located. If you cannot find it, do not search for a long time while driving: stop only where permitted and safe, or ask for guidance when stationary.

Example: rain starts and you cannot remember which stalk operates the wipers. Maintain control, slow down if needed and use the stalk your instructor showed you. Do not stare at the dashboard for several seconds while the car is moving.

Use equipment for the conditions

Switch on the lights required by the conditions and law, use the wipers to maintain visibility and demist the windows before your view is reduced. Do not confuse fog lights with dipped headlights, and turn off equipment that is no longer needed. During the test, safe driving remains the priority: keep your hands and attention ready to control the car.

The examiner may ask for a vehicle check within the test, but the details depend on current procedures and the vehicle. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise quizzes on signs and lighting rules; learn the exact controls for your car with an instructor.
