Category B practical test: how do I choose a safe gap and brake smoothly?
Leave more room as speed or risk rises and brake progressively, without delaying when there is an emergency.
During the Italian category B test, leave enough distance to react and stop, adjusting your braking to speed, road surface and visibility. In ordinary situations, slow down early and apply the brakes progressively. If a sudden hazard appears, the priority is to avoid a collision: use the braking needed while keeping control of the car.
Following distance changes with conditions
Higher speed requires more time and space to stop. Rain, gravel, ice, tyre or brake condition and reduced visibility can increase the distance further. Do not follow so closely that you must brake whenever the vehicle ahead changes speed. Leave a margin to observe, react and stop without hitting it; increase the gap when conditions worsen.
For an expected stop, ease off the accelerator early and reduce speed in time, checking what is happening behind and ahead. Apply the brakes smoothly and select gears as your instructor taught you. Do not rely on one fixed distance in metres: the space needed depends on actual conditions and the road limits.
Example: on a wet road, the vehicle ahead slows near a crossing. If you are too close, even normal braking may not be enough. Anticipate the slowdown when you see the crossing and leave more space, while keeping the crossing itself clear.
Recognise when you must stop quickly
Emergency braking is not something to avoid at all costs. If an immediate hazard appears, brake as firmly as the situation requires, keep control and look for a safe escape path without steering blindly. Practise specific techniques with an instructor in safe conditions.
The test assesses driving and adaptation, not identical pressure on the brake pedal in every situation. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise following-distance quizzes; sensitivity to braking comes from supervised driving practice.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise quizzes on distance and braking and review errors; driving skills develop with an instructor.
Frequently asked questions
Is following distance always a fixed number of metres?
No. It must adapt to speed, surface, traffic, visibility and vehicle condition; one fixed figure does not cover every case.
Must I always brake slowly during the test?
No. Progressive braking suits ordinary stops; an immediate hazard requires an appropriate response while keeping control.
