Category B practical test: which mistakes compromise safety?
Risky conduct or loss of control can undermine the test; there is no universal automatic-fail list.
In the Italian category B practical test, mistakes that endanger people or vehicles, ignore priority or signs, or cause loss of control can compromise the result. There is no absolute list where every isolated mistake always has the same automatic outcome: context, conduct and exam rules matter. The key is to correct safely and never repeat a risky manoeuvre.
Recognise conduct that creates risk
Examples include entering an intersection without yielding, changing lanes without checking a blind spot, ignoring a red light, crossing into another lane without visibility, or forcing someone else to brake sharply. Speed that is unsuitable for conditions can also reduce reaction time and make a bend or crossing dangerous. These examples describe real risks, but they do not replace the official test criteria.
If you realise you are in the wrong position, do not correct it with a sudden movement. Slow down or stop where safe, observe again and continue only when there is enough space. During the route, pay attention to pedestrians, cyclists, intersections, mirrors and signs instead of focusing only on the result. The examiner observes your overall driving and compliance with road rules.
Example: you are in the wrong lane for an exit, but the road markings allow you to continue. Do not cut across two lanes at the last second. Continue steadily and ask for another direction if the route is no longer clear. Safety comes before taking the shortest path.
Do not invent automatic failure rules
MIT sources describe the practical test and the skills to assess; they do not turn every stall, correction or inaccuracy into a universal automatic fail. Dangerous conduct can lead to an unsuccessful result, but the examiner makes that assessment under the current rules.
Ask your instructor what to improve and practise situations that challenge you. Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapter-based study, quizzes and review of theory mistakes; practical safety develops through driving lessons.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you revise theory quizzes and review errors; safe driving also requires supervised practice.
Frequently asked questions
Does one inaccuracy always mean I fail?
There is no rule that applies to every isolated inaccuracy. The result depends on the assessment and your conduct under the safety rules.
Which mistakes should I especially avoid?
Avoid ignoring signs or priority, losing visibility or putting another road user at risk. Work on your specific weak points with your instructor.
