Category B practical test: is a three-point turn always required?
No universal three-move sequence applies; turn around only where it is permitted and safe.
No. The Italian category B practical test does not require one universal three-move sequence for every U-turn. Space, signs and traffic determine how to proceed; you may need more movements or a different location if the requested point is unsafe. Before moving forward or reversing, check that the road is clear and the manoeuvre is permitted.
Do not apply a memorised sequence blindly
The number of movements depends on road width, parked vehicles, kerbs and the car. A three-point method taught during lessons may work in one place and not another. The examiner assesses driving in traffic and safety; do not sacrifice visibility and control to meet an invented movement count.
Before turning, identify a legal place with enough visibility and space to finish without forcing other drivers to brake. Check ahead, behind, mirrors and blind spots. If reversing is needed, move slowly and stop before reaching an obstacle. Recheck the whole area every time you change direction, because another road user may have arrived.
Example: the road is narrow, so one turn is not enough, and the opposite kerb is occupied. Do not try to spin the car quickly. If there is safe room, make the needed corrections; if you cannot see or have enough space, wait for a suitable place and ask the examiner to clarify the instruction.
Assess the manoeuvre, not the number
After turning, align with the correct lane and check traffic before accelerating. Do not cut across an approaching vehicle and cancel the indicator once the manoeuvre is complete. Your instructor can practise different scenarios so you learn when to move forward or reverse in a controlled way.
There is no MIT source establishing ‘three moves or fail’ for every turn. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise quizzes on signs and priority; the actual manoeuvre should be practised with an instructor.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise theory quizzes on priority and traffic rules; practise the turn with an instructor.
Frequently asked questions
Must I always complete a three-point turn?
No. The number of movements depends on the space and context, while obeying road rules and safety.
If the indicated spot is prohibited or unsafe, must I still turn there?
No. Do not force an illegal or unsafe manoeuvre. Ask for clarification and continue only when you have a suitable place.
