Category B practical test: adjust your seat and mirrors

Before moving, set the seat, head restraint, mirrors and seat belt, then check the doors and blind spots.

In the practical Category B driving test, prepare the driving position before moving. Adjust the seat, head restraint and mirrors, fasten the seat belt and check that doors are closed; continue to monitor blind spots during the drive.

Set the driving position before starting

The practical test checks whether the candidate can prepare the vehicle safely and control it. Before moving, adjust the seat so you can reach the pedals and steer without stretching, then set the head restraint and mirrors for your own position. Fasten your seat belt and check that the doors are closed. If the vehicle has adjustable steering, set it before departure as well.

Make each adjustment while the vehicle is stationary and secure. A mirror set for another driver may give a misleading view, so recheck both sides and the rear after changing the seat. Do not begin rolling while reaching across the cabin or looking down at controls. The examiner may ask you to demonstrate or explain a check as part of the vehicle-preparation assessment.

Use mirrors and direct observation together

Mirrors reduce blind areas but cannot eliminate them. Before changing lane, moving off or turning, check the relevant mirror and make a direct observation over your shoulder when needed. Repeat the check if traffic or a cyclist has entered the blind area since your previous look.

For example, if the left mirror shows an empty lane, a quick shoulder check can reveal a vehicle alongside that the mirror does not cover.
