Category B practical test on an extra-urban road: what should I demonstrate?
Adapt speed, following distance and position to visibility and traffic; the actual route depends on the test.
On an extra-urban road during the Italian category B test, show that you can read the road, maintain a suitable following distance and adapt speed and position to visibility and traffic. There is no identical route for every candidate: the office organises the test route. Mandatory training includes extra-urban driving, but this does not guarantee that each test uses the same road.
Adapt your driving to the road
Before increasing speed, read the signs and check limits, bends, intersections and side accesses. An extra-urban road may pass through built-up areas or have changing visibility, so do not choose speed only because the road looks open. Leave room to react to slow vehicles, tractors, cyclists, animals or obstacles, and increase following distance when the road is wet or visibility is reduced.
Keep a stable position in your lane and look ahead to anticipate bends. Before overtaking, check visibility, signs and the space to return; if any condition is missing, wait. At intersections, obey signs and check both directions even when traffic seems light. Make manoeuvres without forcing another road user to brake or change course.
Example: the speed limit is relatively high, but it is raining and vegetation blocks the next bend. Slow down early, leave more space and do not overtake. The maximum limit is not a target that must be reached in every condition.
Separate required training from the test route
MIT requires category B candidates to complete mandatory driving practice that includes night driving and driving on motorways and main extra-urban roads, with the driving school providing the required certificate under current rules. This training requirement does not mean every practical test must use each road type or follow the same route.
Ask your instructor to prepare you for different road conditions and explain which documents must be submitted. During the test, follow directions while continuing to drive safely. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road rules with category B quizzes and mistake review.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers quizzes to revise signs, limits and priority rules; road practice requires lessons with an instructor.
Frequently asked questions
Does every B practical test use an extra-urban road?
An identical route is not guaranteed. The actual test depends on the office, while mandatory training includes extra-urban driving.
Must I always drive at the maximum limit on an extra-urban road?
No. Choose a speed suited to visibility, traffic, road surface and signs, while staying within the applicable limit.
