BE practical test: how do I reverse with a trailer?

Move slowly, check mirrors and blind spots, and correct your path only when there is clear space.

In the BE practical test, reversing with a trailer requires frequent checks and small movements. Check the area and vehicle dimensions before moving, use the mirrors without losing awareness of your surroundings, and keep the speed very low. If your path becomes uncertain or an obstacle appears, stop and correct only when you can do so safely.

Observe the whole combination

With a trailer, its rear follows a different path from the car and may move toward one side as you reverse. Before starting, identify the available space, cones, people and boundaries. Adjust mirrors and seat as your instructor directs. Check the front of the car too: while the rear moves, the nose may swing in the opposite direction.

Move at walking speed and use gradual corrections; do not turn the wheel sharply. Alternate between mirror checks and looking around, stopping if you lose sight of the trailer’s path. Do not rely on one universal rule for steering direction: the effect depends on the hitch, angle and position of the combination. Ask your instructor to teach you how to recover the line on the exam vehicle.

Example: the trailer is getting close to a marker on the right. Stop before contact, check the front and rear, and make the correction agreed with your instructor. Restart only after confirming nobody has entered the area.

Correct without rushing

If you need to realign, bring the combination to a position that allows a slow, controlled manoeuvre. Any move forward requires fresh checks of traffic and clearance. Do not keep steering and hope the trailer will line up by itself, and do not let the angle between car and trailer become difficult to recover.

Practise BE reversing with an instructor and a suitable combination, not alone in an open car park. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you revise licence categories and towing theory quizzes, but it does not teach real manoeuvring technique.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers theory quizzes on categories and towing; BE reversing needs guided practice with the combination.

Frequently asked questions

Must I reverse without stopping?

No. Stopping to recheck and correct safely can be better than continuing with an uncertain path; follow the test programme and instructions.

Can I watch only the mirrors during the manoeuvre?

No. Mirrors are essential, but also check the front of the car and the surrounding area for obstacles and other road users.
