Licence categories
When can category B cover a 4,000 kg electric van in Italy?
In Italy, B can cover some alternative-fuel goods vehicles up to 4,250 kg, subject to technical conditions and two years holding the licence.
In Italy, category B may cover certain goods vehicles without a trailer, powered by alternative fuels, with an authorised mass above 3,500 kg and up to 4,250 kg. The vehicle must meet documented technical conditions, and the driver must have held category B for at least two years. This is not a general extension for every electric van.
The Italian exception has specific conditions
The ordinary Italian category B limit remains 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass. The Highway Code provides an exception for certain vehicles without a trailer, intended to carry goods and powered by specified alternative fuels. Their authorised mass may exceed 3,500 kg but cannot exceed 4,250 kg.
The extra mass must be due solely to the greater mass of the propulsion system compared with a similarly sized conventional vehicle. It must not increase payload. The driver must also have held category B for at least two years. These requirements concern both the vehicle and the person: electric power alone does not qualify the van.
Assessing a 4,000 kg van
Check the registration certificate for the vehicle class, goods-transport use and maximum authorised mass. You also need technical documents showing that the 500 kg above the ordinary threshold comes from the propulsion system and does not increase payload. Tare and the actual weight on a particular trip cannot replace the authorised mass.
For example, an electric N2 van registered at 4,000 kg with no trailer might fall within the exception if its approval documents prove the conditions and the driver has held B for at least two years. A vehicle towing a trailer, carrying passengers or gaining additional payload does not fit that description. Ask the Italian Motor Vehicle Office or manufacturer about the specific vehicle before driving.
Do not mistake an exception for a general new limit
The ordinary Italian B limit has not become 4,250 kg for everyone. A future European rule or proposal does not by itself change the law currently in force in Italy; national implementing rules must enter into force. This guide describes only the existing exception for certain alternative-fuel goods vehicles when all conditions are met.
Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you study licence categories through theory quizzes and mistake review. It does not certify a van’s approval or determine whether the exception applies; those checks require the vehicle’s official documents.
Use Quiz Patente Ufficiale for category theory quizzes and mistake review; the 4,250 kg exception requires a technical check of the vehicle documents.
Frequently asked questions
Does holding category B for four years qualify me to drive a 4,000 kg electric van?
It meets only the time requirement. The vehicle must also be for goods, have no trailer, and meet the technical conditions on propulsion mass and payload.
Can I use the exception for an electric camper?
No. The exception concerns certain vehicles intended for goods transport; it is not a general extension to campers.
