Maximum towing mass is a technical limit for the towing vehicle. Find it in the registration document or approval records, paying attention to the trailer type and the exact vehicle configuration. Do not confuse it with the car’s maximum authorised mass or the licence-category threshold.

Find the towing vehicle’s technical figure

In the car’s registration document, check the technical data for maximum towing mass. Some documents show separate limits for a braked and an unbraked trailer. The field layout and codes depend on the document format, so consult its official legend, the manufacturer or the motor vehicle authority if the value is unclear. Do not estimate towing capacity from engine size, power or the car’s kerb mass.

This figure is separate from the driving licence category. Italian B, code 96 and BE rules use authorised maximum masses for the vehicle combination and the thresholds in Article 116. The towing-mass value says what this specific car is technically approved to tow. You must satisfy both checks; a higher licence does not change the value recorded for the car.

Example: a car’s document allows 1,300 kg of braked towing mass, but the trailer’s maximum authorised mass is 1,500 kg. Even if the empty trailer weighs only 900 kg and the driver has BE, the licence does not authorise towing it at the trailer’s rated maximum. Check the approval for the exact setup and never exceed the car’s technical limit.
