Does a minicar’s number plate show which licence you need?

No. A plate alone is not enough; check the minicar’s approved category, technical data and vehicle documents.

No. A minicar’s plate or appearance alone does not tell you which licence is required. Check its approved vehicle category and registration data: a light quadricycle generally requires AM, while a non-light quadricycle may require B1 or another category depending on its classification and technical features.

“Minicar” is a commercial name, not a vehicle category

People use “minicar” for different vehicles. Light quadricycles in category L6e can be driven with AM if they meet the applicable requirements, including a maximum design speed of 45 km/h and limits on mass and power. Non-light L7e quadricycles have different characteristics; the Highway Code provides category B1 for that class, while the exact vehicle record must still be checked.

A number plate does not replace the vehicle registration certificate or show every parameter needed for the licence decision. Check its category, power, unladen mass, design speed and approval. Two versions may look alike but have different technical specifications and licence requirements.

Verify the category before driving

Read the vehicle document and compare its recorded class with the licence you hold. For AM, confirm that it is a compliant moped or light quadricycle. For an L7e quadricycle, check the recorded classification and whether B1 or another licence category covers it. If the vehicle was imported or modified, ask the Motor Vehicle Office using its approval number and current documents.

Do not infer the category from the plate, the driver’s age or a seller calling the vehicle a “50”. The plate identifies the vehicle but does not resolve an approval question. Some limits also depend on the exact registered version and equipment.

Example

Two similar-looking minicars can differ: an L6e vehicle with a 45 km/h design speed may fall under AM, while a more powerful L7e quadricycle may require B1. If the registration certificate shows a category you did not expect, clarify the entitlement with an official source before driving.

Frequently asked questions

Can every plated minicar be driven with AM?

No. AM applies to vehicles meeting its category and technical requirements; an L7e minicar may require another licence.

Does category B also cover a minicar?

It depends on the vehicle’s classification. Compare its approval documents with the categories on your licence.
