Vehicle documents
I changed my motorcycle’s power: what must I update in its documents?
A power change is a technical modification: it must be permitted and follow the required procedure before the vehicle records are updated.
Changing a vehicle’s power is a modification to its construction characteristics under Article 78 of the Italian Highway Code. Installing a kit or control unit is not enough: the change must be technically permissible, follow the required approval procedure and be entered in the vehicle documents before you ride in the new configuration.
Why installing a kit is not enough
Changing declared or actual power can affect type approval, safety and the licence category required. MIT treats a power change as a modification to construction characteristics governed by Article 78 of the Highway Code and Article 236 of its implementing regulation. Do not assume the work is complete just because a workshop fitted a control unit, limiter or power-up kit: the mechanical installation does not itself update type approval or the vehicle registration document.
MIT’s circular on power changes refers to manufacturer approval and assesses the modified vehicle against a reference model. When a manufacturer certifies that a vehicle is made equivalent to another approved version, the Motorizzazione assesses the application and may require an inspection and test. The technical solution must match that used for the reference version and must not compromise the vehicle’s original compliance. The applicable procedure depends on the specific vehicle and modification; the 2008 circular is not a promise that every restriction or power increase can be authorised today.
A power reduction to meet A2 limits also requires correct records. To ride a motorcycle on A2, it must meet all three rules: power no greater than 35 kW, power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.2 kW/kg and an original version that did not produce more than twice the restricted power. A physical modification does not make a different, unapproved figure valid. If power exceeds what your licence permits, continuing to ride leaves a mismatch between the vehicle, its type approval and your entitlement.
A careful sequence for legalising the change
Before buying or fitting parts, ask the manufacturer or authorised representative whether an approved alternative configuration exists for that exact model, year and variant, and which documents it can provide. Ask the Motorizzazione which application, manufacturer approval, technical certificate and inspection may be required in your case. Do not rely on the fact that a kit is sold for the same motorcycle family: type approval concerns the identified version, not the model name in general.
After approval, complete the required steps and verify that the updated vehicle document shows the correct power and other affected characteristics. Keep the work records and ask your insurer whether the policy requires notification. If the vehicle and document disagree, do not use the altered configuration until the issue is resolved. Quiz Patente Ufficiale can help you review theory on power, power-to-weight ratio and A categories; it does not authorise modifications or verify the papers for a specific vehicle.

Frequently asked questions
Can I ride immediately after fitting a restriction kit?
No. The kit does not update type approval or the vehicle records by itself. First confirm that the change is allowed, follow the manufacturer’s and Motorizzazione’s procedure, complete any required inspection and wait for the records to be updated.
Can an A2 holder ride a restricted motorcycle?
Only if the configuration is properly approved and documented and the motorcycle meets every A2 limit: no more than 35 kW, no more than 0.2 kW/kg, and an original version that was no more than twice the restricted power.
