Road rules
Can you take a 125 cc motorcycle on the motorway at 17?
No. The 2024 exception requires an adult rider, even if the 125 motorcycle and A1 licence are otherwise valid.
No. Article 175 requires a motorcycle of at least 120 cc and an adult rider. At 17, engine size and an A1 licence are not enough for a motorway or main extra-urban road.
The age requirement is separate
Since 14 December 2024, the Code has allowed motorcycles of at least 120 cc, or electric motorcycles of at least 6 kW, on the listed roads when ridden by an adult. The technical threshold and age must both be met. The law does not say that an A1 licence is enough, nor does this provision create an exception for an experienced rider travelling with an adult.
A 17-year-old may hold A1 and ride on roads where that category is allowed, subject to its limits. This does not remove the separate age condition for motorways and main extra-urban roads. Even a registered, insured and compliant 125 cannot overcome it. For example, a 17-year-old with A1 on a 124 cc scooter meets the engine-size condition but still cannot enter a motorway under this exception.
Keep the licence and road rules distinct
Article 116 determines the licence needed for a vehicle; Article 175 determines which vehicles can use particular roads. Reaching 18 does not grant a licence category, and holding the right licence does not remove the adult-rider condition. After turning 18, check the licence, registration certificate, vehicle condition and route restrictions before travelling.
The rule concerns motorways and main extra-urban roads covered by the Code. A ring road needs to be classified section by section; its name alone does not decide the issue. Quiz Patente Ufficiale lets you practise exam quizzes and review mistakes on traffic and licence categories. It supports theory study, but it does not authorise a journey: check your age, licence, vehicle papers and route.

Frequently asked questions
Can I enter at 17 if an adult is travelling with me?
No. The motorcycle must be ridden by an adult. An adult passenger or a companion in another vehicle does not satisfy that requirement.
Does the ban also cover a secondary extra-urban road?
Article 175's exception concerns motorways and main extra-urban roads. The same restriction does not automatically apply to secondary roads, but check signs and other bans.
