For a 125 on the motorway, is a B licence enough or do you need A1?

Motorway access and the licence required for a 125 are separate checks: the vehicle, licence category and rider's age all matter.

The motorway exception does not determine which licence covers a motorcycle. First check the vehicle category and your licence; then apply Article 175's engine-size and adult-rider conditions.

Road access does not replace a motorcycle licence

These are two different questions: may I ride this motorcycle, and may this motorcycle use this road? Article 116 defines licence categories and the vehicles they cover. Article 175 sets access conditions for motorways and main extra-urban roads. Meeting the technical threshold in the second article does not turn one licence category into another.

An A1 licence covers motorcycles up to 125 cc and 11 kW, subject to the other requirements. In Italy, a national B licence also permits the holder to ride A1 vehicles within Italy under the conditions in the Code. This national equivalence should not be treated as an A1 category granted for international travel. Before leaving, compare the licence and vehicle documents, including any codes or restrictions; a model advertised as “125” may have versions with different specifications.

Then apply the current motorway rule

Since 14 December 2024, Article 175 allows motorcycles with an internal-combustion engine of at least 120 cc on the listed roads when ridden by an adult. So a 125 ridden in Italy under a B licence must still meet the licence rules, the rider must be at least 18 for the Article 175 exception, and no route-specific ban may apply.

Do not assume the B/A1 equivalence applies abroad. Check the destination country's law and recognition rules before crossing a border. A learner permit or a licence with restrictions can also carry separate conditions. Quiz Patente Ufficiale provides exam quizzes and error review on licence categories and traffic rules. Use it to study theory; decide whether your particular motorcycle is covered by reading its documents and the licence you actually hold.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride a 125 on an Italian motorway with a B licence?

An Italian B licence includes A1-equivalent permission within Italy, within A1 limits. Motorway access also requires Article 175 conditions: at least 120 cc for a combustion motorcycle, an adult rider and no specific ban.

Does the same equivalence apply abroad?

Do not assume so. The national B/A1 equivalence is not the same as holding A1 for international travel. Check the destination country's rules before the trip.
