Practical A test on an electric motorcycle: which bike is accepted?

For the practical A test on an electric motorcycle, the MIT sets a minimum power-to-weight ratio of 0.25 kW/kg.

The practical test for category A can use an electric motorcycle without a sidecar. The MIT specifies a minimum power-to-weight ratio of 0.25 kW/kg; the 600 cm³ minimum applies to combustion engines. The testing office must be able to verify the test motorcycle’s data.

The electric-motorcycle requirement

Category A has no separate electric subcategory. For the practical test, the candidate must use a motorcycle without a sidecar that meets the requirements for the category. The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) page for A2/A examinations sets a minimum power-to-weight ratio of 0.25 kW/kg for an electric motorcycle. For combustion motorcycles, the page instead lists a minimum engine capacity of 600 cm³, minimum power of 50 kW and unladen mass above 180 kg, with a stated tolerance for the mass requirement.

Do not assign an engine displacement to an electric motorcycle or assume that every combustion-engine requirement applies unchanged to electric vehicles. The MIT page distinguishes the electric criterion. If the model documents do not show the ratio clearly, ask the testing office before booking. These specifications concern the vehicle used for the practical test; they do not by themselves define which motorcycles may be ridden on the road or replace the licence check for a particular vehicle.

For example, an electric motorcycle without a sidecar with a documented ratio of 0.27 kW/kg clears the MIT’s published minimum; at 0.22 kW/kg it falls short, even if an advertisement quotes a high peak output. Use the technical documentation relevant to the vehicle, not an estimate based on its apparent weight or range. The vehicle must also be identifiable and in the configuration presented for the test.

Verify the motorcycle before the practical test

The MIT application asks for the motorcycle’s technical characteristics and a copy of its registration document. Before scheduling the practical A test, check that the documents identify the electric powertrain and show, or allow the office to verify, the power-to-weight ratio. If only nominal power is listed, ask which manufacturer certificate the Motorizzazione accepts instead of substituting a sales specification or an improvised calculation.

Ask the driving school whether the specific motorcycle and its configuration are accepted. An electric road motorcycle is not automatically suitable for the test. Quiz Patente Ufficiale provides chapters, exam quizzes and error review for studying common road rules and motorcycle-category theory; it does not select or certify the vehicle for the practical test.

Frequently asked questions

Must the electric motorcycle for the A test have a 600 cm³ engine?

No. The 600 cm³ minimum is for combustion engines. For an electric motorcycle, the MIT lists a minimum power-to-weight ratio of 0.25 kW/kg.

Does an advertised power figure prove the motorcycle is suitable?

No. You need documented technical data to verify the required power-to-weight ratio and confirmation that the vehicle is accepted for the practical A test.
