Jet ski rental: which licence should you check before riding?

A boating licence is always required to operate a personal watercraft in Italy; renting it does not replace the licence.

In Italy, operating a personal watercraft requires a boating licence regardless of engine power. Renting a jet ski, receiving a safety briefing or being accompanied by the rental operator does not replace the required qualification.

The licence requirement applies regardless of power

MIT lists personal watercraft among craft that require a boating licence, irrespective of engine power. This differs from some small-boat exemptions based on age, distance and engine specifications. Do not assume that a low-powered model or a short rental session is exempt: the rule concerns the type of craft.

Before accepting the keys, confirm that your licence covers the activity and that the document is valid. Ask the operator about the permitted area, local restrictions, safety equipment and the return procedure. A rental briefing is important for operating that particular model, but it is not a substitute for the legal qualification.

Check the craft and rental conditions before departure

Inspect the identification and safety equipment with the operator, confirm passenger limits and ask how to stop the engine and call for help. Follow the marked area and keep clear of swimmers, shore, moorings and other traffic. If you do not hold the required licence, do not operate the watercraft even if the rental company offers to explain the controls.

For example, a person without a boating licence cannot lawfully operate a jet ski merely because the engine is small or the rental takes place close to shore. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review nautical rules and exam questions, including which craft require a licence.
