Vehicle documents
Imported motorcycle: which document confirms its approved category and power?
For an imported motorcycle, compare the registration document, CoC and VIN; the Italian document records the vehicle’s data.
The certificate of conformity (CoC) describes a vehicle type’s approval, while the Italian registration document records the data for the individual vehicle registered in Italy. For category and power, compare both against the same VIN and request an official correction if they differ.
The CoC and registration document serve different purposes
The manufacturer or its authorised representative issues the CoC to confirm that a particular vehicle matches an approved type and to list technical features for its version. The Italian single circulation document or registration certificate records the registered vehicle and the data used for road circulation in Italy. After import, the CoC may support registration, but a foreign copy or model specification does not replace the current Italian registration document.
Check that the VIN in the documents matches the motorcycle. Compare its category, power, engine displacement and power-to-weight ratio where relevant. For an A1 motorcycle, for example, reading “125” on the CoC is not enough: power and ratio must also be checked. An electric vehicle has no engine displacement and requires attention to the relevant power figure. A sales name or listing may describe another version intended for a different market or modified after approval.
If the CoC and Italian registration document disagree, do not choose whichever figure is more favourable to your licence. The mismatch might concern a variant, a transcription error, an incomplete conversion or a missing update. Present both documents and the VIN to the Motorizzazione or an authorised technical professional and ask which procedure will align them. Avoid riding with characteristics that do not match the registered configuration.
A practical check before riding
First identify the vehicle by its VIN. Read the approved category in its Italian registration document and compare the technical figures with the CoC for that VIN and version. Then confirm that your licence covers the category and all applicable limits. If the Italian document does not show power or category clearly, request an official extract or confirmation; a seller cannot replace the administrative record.
For example, a sales listing may call an imported motorcycle A1 because it has a 125 cm³ engine, although the CoC shows power above 11 kW. Do not assume displacement is enough: confirm the approved value, version and Italian registration data before riding. Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review categories and theory limits through chapters, quizzes and error review; it does not check a VIN or certify an imported motorcycle.

Frequently asked questions
Is the CoC alone enough to ride an imported motorcycle in Italy?
No. The CoC attests to approval characteristics, but for road use check the Italian registration document for the registered vehicle and its consistency with the CoC.
Which value should I use if the CoC and registration document differ?
Do not choose one yourself. Ask the Motorizzazione to check the VIN, version and registration procedure before riding.
