My registration says L3e: what kind of motorcycle is it and which licence applies?

L3e identifies a two-wheeled motorcycle; the licence depends on displacement, power and power-to-weight ratio.

L3e is the approval category for a two-wheeled motorcycle without a sidecar. The code alone does not decide the licence: compare its recorded displacement, power and power-to-weight ratio with the A1, A2 or A limits.

What the L3e code tells you

L3e is the European approval category for a two-wheeled motorcycle without a sidecar. A registration document may also show a subcategory with further vehicle details. The code helps identify the vehicle type but does not tell you which licence is sufficient; for that, compare the technical data with the licence held. L3e vehicles can have very different power configurations.

For A1, the MIT page lists motorcycles up to 125 cm³, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg: all three conditions apply together. A2 allows at most 35 kW and 0.2 kW/kg, and the motorcycle must not derive from a version producing more than twice the power. Category A covers motorcycles without those power limits, subject to age or access requirements. Compare these limits with the approved data for the particular vehicle, not a brochure’s peak output or a similar variant’s figures.

For example, an L3e with 125 cm³ may still fall outside A1 if it exceeds 11 kW or 0.1 kW/kg. A 30 kW L3e may fall within A2 only if it also meets the ratio and original-version rule. If it is electric, there is no displacement to check: verify the power figure used for approval and the required ratio.

A useful order for checking the document

Confirm that L3e matches the VIN and certificate of conformity. Then find displacement, power and power-to-weight ratio, along with any restrictions recorded on the vehicle or licence. If a value is missing, ask the manufacturer or Motorizzazione which document proves the approved figure. A modification not yet recorded can make the actual vehicle and its documents inconsistent.

Frequently asked questions

If my registration says L3e, is an A licence enough?

The code identifies a motorcycle, but does not by itself determine the required category. Compare displacement, power, ratio and age requirements with your licence.

Can I always ride an L3e with 125 cm³ on A1?

No. A1 also requires the 11 kW power limit and a maximum power-to-weight ratio of 0.1 kW/kg to be met together.
