Used boat engine: where to find the data relevant to a licence?

Check declared power, displacement, cycle and installation in official engine documents, not only in a sales listing.

To check whether an Italian boating licence is required, verify the installed engine’s maximum operating power, displacement and type. Within six miles or on inland waters, exceeding 30 kW or the applicable displacement threshold triggers the requirement; a sales listing or horsepower alone is not enough.

Read the official specification for the installed motor

Start with the engine identification plate, model and serial number, then compare them with the manufacturer's declaration and the boat documents. A sales advertisement may round horsepower, describe a different version or omit the injection system. If the plate is unreadable, ask the manufacturer or authorised dealer for a document tied to the serial number.

Power above 30 kW is an independent trigger: either it or the applicable displacement limit is enough. Match the exact engine type before applying a limit.

Check that the documents match the engine on the boat

A used engine may have been modified, derated or replaced. Confirm that the unit actually installed is the one recorded in the documents and that its configuration and declared power are consistent with the boat's approval. If an essential detail is missing, obtain written clarification from the manufacturer or competent office instead of guessing from the model name.

For example, a 1,050 cc four-stroke outboard exceeds its displacement limit even at 28 kW; a 900 cc engine at 35 kW exceeds the power threshold instead. A turbo diesel uses the 1,300 cc threshold, while a naturally aspirated diesel uses 2,000 cc.

Frequently asked questions

Is the horsepower in the sales listing enough?

No. Check declared power in kW, displacement, engine cycle and installation in official documents.

What if the engine has been replaced?

Use the records and declaration for the engine actually installed, and confirm that the boat documents have been updated as required.
