What licence is needed to command a recreational ship?

In Italian recreational boating law, a recreational ship is a unit over 24 metres. Commanding one requires a category B boating licence without distance limits, held for at least three years. The title and its history should be checked before a voyage or hire.

A recreational ship is over 24 metres

The regulation defines a recreational ship by length: it is a pleasure craft longer than 24 metres. This category is different from a recreational boat, so a licence suitable for smaller vessels is not enough simply because the operator has extensive experience.

For command of a recreational ship, MIT specifies the category B licence without distance limits and a minimum of three years' possession. Confirm both the category and the date from which the relevant entitlement has been held. If the document was extended to sail or otherwise amended later, ask the issuing authority how the three-year period is assessed for the intended command.

Confirm the entitlement before accepting command

Before a charter or handover, compare the licence, vessel classification and planned duties. Ask the owner or operator which qualification is required for the specific vessel and whether additional professional or flag-state requirements apply. A category B licence held for the required period is the boating qualification; it does not automatically confer commercial credentials for every job.
