Can you get an A licence without holding A2?

Yes. Direct access to an A licence is available from age 24; there is also a progressive route after two years with A2.

You can obtain an A licence without A2 from age 24 by taking the theory and practical tests. From age 20, if you have held A2 for at least two years, you can take the practical test or complete the official seven-hour progressive access course without an exam.

Two routes to category A

You do not always need to hold A2 first. The direct route lets you obtain category A when you turn 24, by taking the required tests. Anyone who has already held A2 for at least two years can access category A from age 20 through the progressive route, which includes a specific course at a driving school or authorised centre. These are different routes; the right one depends on your age, experience and willingness to attend the course.

The progressive route requires you to have held A2 for the full two years. An A1 or B licence does not count as this requirement. MIT also specifies that A1 entitlement automatically attached to a B licence for driving in Italy does not count as an independently obtained A1 licence for this route. Before enrolling, have the date and category on your licence checked.

The direct route does not exempt you from tests: the minimum age gives you access, but the required formalities, fitness requirements and tests still apply. If you are under 24, you cannot bypass A2 through direct access; you can check whether the progressive route applies to you. Check the latest MIT guidance and ask the relevant office about administrative steps and test vehicles.

If you already hold A1, B1, B or BE, MIT allows you to take only the practical riding test for category A, subject to the conditions in its official guidance. The progressive route without an exam is reserved for those who have held A2 for at least two years and complete the course at a driving school.

  • Direct access to A: from age 24, with the required tests.
  • Progressive access to A: from age 20, after holding A2 for at least two years and completing the specific course.
  • A1 automatically attached to B for driving in Italy does not meet the A2 requirement.

How to choose the right route

If you already have A2 and are about to reach the two-year mark, compare the course dates, driving-school availability and booking procedure with the direct exam route. If you do not hold A2, the direct route is available only once you turn 24. Do not confuse the progressive access course with an optional lesson: it is a formal requirement for that route.

Before paying or booking, check the documents, fees and procedures currently required: ministerial pages may be updated and local offices manage appointments. Theory preparation is useful for any motorcycle licence route.

To revise road theory,Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers focused chapters, timed quizzes and review of mistakes.
