Category A and a powerful tricycle: how does it differ from a motorcycle?

A tricycle over 15 kW requires category A and a specific minimum age, separate from the motorcycle power limits.

Category A also covers motor tricycles over 15 kW, but Italian road law requires the driver to be at least 21 for this vehicle. The 15 kW threshold applies to tricycles covered by A1; it is not a general power limit for category A motorcycles.

The threshold applies to tricycles, not motorcycles

Article 116 of the Italian Highway Code distinguishes motorcycles from motor tricycles. A1 covers tricycles with power no greater than 15 kW. A tricycle above that threshold requires category A, and the driver must be at least 21. Do not confuse this with access to category A for two-wheeled motorcycles: the MIT lists a normal minimum age of 24, or 20 if the rider has held A2 for at least two years. The 15 kW threshold is therefore not a general cap on a motorcycle ridden with category A.

Choose the licence by the vehicle’s recorded classification, not by its appearance in a photograph. Check the approval category and registered power for the individual vehicle. A model with two front wheels may be approved as a tricycle, while a marketing name alone does not establish its legal class. Also check the categories and dates on the licence. Someone who holds category A must still meet the specific age condition for riding a powerful tricycle.

For example, a tricycle approved at 17 kW exceeds A1’s 15 kW limit; it requires category A, and the rider must be at least 21. A two-wheeled motorcycle at 17 kW does not follow this special tricycle rule: check it under the motorcycle categories using its specifications and the rider’s licence.

Check a particular vehicle

Find the approval category and registered power in the vehicle document. If the information is unclear, compare it with the certificate of conformity or ask the Motorizzazione; do not rely on an advert calling the vehicle a tricycle. Then verify the required licence and age before riding. Category A does not replace proper approval and does not make a modified vehicle compliant with its documents.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, exam quizzes and error review for the theory of vehicle categories and common rules. It supports study, while the classification and power of your vehicle must be confirmed in its official documents; eligibility to ride is a separate question from quiz preparation.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review common motorcycle-category rules through chapters, exam quizzes and error review.

Frequently asked questions

Can I ride a tricycle rated exactly 15 kW with A1?

Yes. A1 covers tricycles up to and including 15 kW. Above that, category A and a minimum age of 21 are required.

Does a 17 kW tricycle follow the A2 motorcycle limits?

No. The relevant tricycle rule is that more than 15 kW requires category A and a rider aged at least 21. Check the vehicle’s recorded classification, not its appearance.
