Can you ride tricycles with an A1 licence?
An A1 licence also covers certain motor tricycles: learn the power limit and how to check the vehicle.
An A1 licence covers motor tricycles up to 15 kW and motorcycles up to 125 cm³, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg. You can obtain it from age 16.
The limit for tricycles
Yes. An A1 licence lets you ride motor tricycles with a power output not exceeding 15 kW. The motorcycle limits do not automatically apply to these vehicles: A1 motorcycles must meet three conditions together, namely a maximum engine capacity of 125 cm³, maximum power of 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio no greater than 0.1 kW/kg. These are separate classes, so start by checking the category shown in the vehicle documents.
In everyday language, “tricycle” can mean very different vehicles: a three-wheeled scooter, an enclosed vehicle, a motorcycle with sidecar or a quadricycle may have different technical classifications. The visible number of wheels alone does not determine which licence you need. If in doubt, check the vehicle’s type-approval category and maximum net power in its documents, then compare them with the licence requirements.
For example, a vehicle registered as a tricycle with a stated power of 14 kW is within the A1 power limit, provided there are no other conditions or individual restrictions. A 16 kW vehicle exceeds that limit, even if a dealer presents it as suitable for young riders. For imported or modified vehicles, or where the documents are unclear, ask the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Office to check before riding.
For an A1 motorcycle, all three limits must be met at the same time. A motor tricycle has a separate 15 kW threshold. The vehicle documents must show the correct type approval: a three-wheeled vehicle is not automatically an A1 tricycle.
- Motor tricycle: maximum power 15 kW for category A1.
- A1 motorcycle: up to 125 cm³, 11 kW and a power-to-weight ratio up to 0.1 kW/kg; all three requirements apply.
- Check the technical category in the documents, not just the number of wheels or the name used in advertising.
Check the classification and test requirements
The vehicle registration document contains the details needed to identify the vehicle. If its category or power is unclear, do not rely on advertising material: it may describe a different version or omit the Italian classification of that specific vehicle. Type approval determines the vehicle’s legal characteristics, while your licence determines which categories you may ride.
You can obtain A1 from age 16 by taking the theory and practical tests under the ministerial procedure. The entitlement does not replace the equipment and care needed when riding a tricycle: its weight, track and cornering behaviour may differ from a two-wheeled scooter. In theory tests, take care not to confuse the A1 motorcycle limits with the separate tricycle limit.
To consolidate your theory,Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers study chapters, timed practice tests and review of incorrect answers.
Frequently asked questions
What is the maximum power of a tricycle you can ride with A1?
15 kW. The tricycle limit is separate from the A1 motorcycle limits of 125 cm³, 11 kW and 0.1 kW/kg.
Does the 125 cm³ limit also apply to A1 tricycles?
MIT lists tricycles up to 15 kW separately from motorcycles subject to engine-capacity, power and power-to-weight limits. You must therefore identify the vehicle’s approved category correctly.
