A2 licence: how many exam attempts are allowed, and when do they expire?

The MIT allows two theory attempts in six months and three practical attempts within eleven months after the theory test.

For the A2 licence, the MIT allows two theory attempts within six months of the application and three practical attempts within eleven months, starting in the month after passing theory and receiving the learner’s permit. The two deadlines start at different points, so check the dates recorded for your application.

Two different time windows

The Italian Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport (MIT) lists separate attempt limits and deadlines. Candidates have two theory attempts during the six months after submitting the application. After passing theory, they receive the learner’s permit, which opens the practical-test period. The MIT allows three practical attempts within eleven months, counted from the month after theory is passed and the learner’s permit is issued.

Do not count the eleven months from the initial application. For example, if you apply on 12 January and pass theory in March, the practical deadline is not simply eleven months after 12 January: the rule refers to the following month, and the date in your official file controls. Available test dates also depend on the local office. Keep the receipt and learner’s permit, record the theory result and ask the Motorizzazione to confirm the deadline that applies to your case.

These limits describe the examination route for obtaining A2. They do not guarantee that appointments will be available before the deadline, and they do not automatically extend the period when the office has no nearby date. If the practical window expires, do not assume that unused attempts remain valid: check whether you must submit a new application or follow another procedure. The MIT page also says that holders of A1, B1, B or BE may obtain A2 by taking only the practical test, so the theory stage does not apply in the same way to every candidate.

A simple way to keep track

When you open the application, save the receipt showing the submission date. After passing theory, note the result date and the learner’s permit issue date, then ask the office for the final date for your three practical attempts. Book with the remaining attempt count in mind. If you change driving school or testing office, verify that your file was transferred and that the new office has recorded previous attempts correctly.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale can support theory study with chapters, exam quizzes and error review. It does not manage appointments or administrative deadlines. Use the Motorizzazione documents and ask the office about the dates that apply to your application before the period expires.

Quiz Patente Ufficiale helps you review road signs and common traffic rules with chapter study, quizzes and mistake review.
