Which licence do you need to drive a motor caravan?

The licence needed for a motor caravan depends mainly on its maximum authorised mass and category shown in the vehicle documents.

A motor caravan up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass can be driven on B, provided it meets the category’s other limits. Above 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, C1 is required; above 7,500 kg, C is required.

Maximum authorised mass is the key figure

The model or length of a motor caravan does not tell you which licence you need. Check its approval category and maximum authorised mass on the registration document. In general, B covers motor vehicles with maximum authorised mass no greater than 3,500 kg, subject to the category’s other requirements. Above that, C1 or C may be needed, depending on mass and approval.

Do not confuse maximum authorised mass with unladen mass, a weighbridge reading or the remaining payload for luggage and passengers. A motor caravan may weigh less than 3,500 kg when checked but have a higher maximum authorised mass; the licence limit is assessed using the relevant administrative figure. B does not allow you to exceed the vehicle’s maximum load either: actual mass and axle limits still apply.

Check field F.2 on harmonised European documents; its position or label may vary on older or foreign documents. If the motor caravan has been converted, fitted out or re-registered, use the updated figures, not an old brochure. For a rental, ask for written confirmation of the licence needed for that specific vehicle, especially if the fleet includes versions over 3.5 tonnes.

The decisive figure is maximum authorised mass in field F.2, not the motor caravan’s unladen weight or its weight during a journey. C1 allows a trailer up to 750 kg; a heavier trailer may require C1E. The correct licence still does not permit exceeding the motor caravan’s gross or axle limits.

  • Up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass: generally category B.
  • Above 3,500 kg: check whether C1 or C is required, based on the figure and approval.
  • Actual and unladen weight do not replace maximum authorised mass.
  • Always check the updated document after conversion or modification.

Before setting off: licence, load and towing

A licence is only one check. Load the motor caravan without exceeding its authorised mass and watch axle limits, especially when carrying bicycles, a motorbike carrier, full tanks or equipment. Follow the figures in the documents and the manufacturer’s instructions. If towing, check the combination separately: its category, authorised masses and towing capacity may require BE or code 96 even when the motor caravan itself falls within B.

Before travelling, also check local rules on height, mass, ferry access and urban zones; they vary by route. Do not rely on someone else’s experience with a similar-looking motor caravan: versions can have different approved masses.

Frequently asked questions

What licence do I need for a 3,800 kg motor caravan?

Generally C1 if maximum authorised mass is over 3,500 kg and no more than 7,500 kg, and the vehicle is not in D1 or D. If it exceeds 7,500 kg, C is required. Check field F.2.

For a motor caravan with a trailer, is it enough to check the motor caravan’s mass?

No. You must also consider the combination’s authorised masses and towing requirements. Depending on the figures, BE or code 96 may be needed.
