Category B1: which quadricycles can you drive?

How to distinguish B1, AM and B, and check a quadricycle’s category in its documents.

Category B1, available from age 16, covers non-light quadricycles with unladen mass up to 400 kg and maximum power up to 15 kW. For vehicles designed to carry goods, the mass threshold is 550 kg.

B1 covers a specific vehicle category

B1 is the category for certain non-light quadricycles. It is not a licence for “microcars” in the colloquial sense: vehicles that look alike may belong to different categories. AM covers mopeds and light quadricycles, while B1 has its own technical definition. Category B is different again. Before deciding that a small car can be driven, identify its official classification.

Start with the vehicle documents: approval category, mass and technical specifications. The MIT “Obtaining a category B1 licence” page explains the entitlement, while the registration document identifies the specific vehicle. A sales listing or the term “minicar” is not proof. If the document lists a different category from the one expected, do not assume equivalence: ask the seller and, if necessary, the Motorizzazione.

B1 is not a licence for every microcar: the vehicle must be approved as a non-light quadricycle and remain within 400 kg unladen mass (550 kg if designed to carry goods) and 15 kW. It is available from age 16. Holders of A1, A2, A, B or BE need to pass only the practical test to obtain B1.

  • AM, B1 and B are not interchangeable.
  • Appearance does not reveal a vehicle’s approval category.
  • Check the licence, codes and vehicle documents together.

When the question is practical

This often comes up before buying a quadricycle, using a family member’s vehicle or renting an unusual one. Ask for copies of the documents in advance and check that the driver holds the required category. If the vehicle has been modified, check that the modification is legal and registered. A non-compliant setup can affect road use and safety; the fact that the vehicle starts and moves does not prove it is legal.

The licence category is separate from requirements for registration, insurance, helmets or road use. These may vary by vehicle type and should be checked against the relevant sources. If unsure about technical specifications, the Motorizzazione or a qualified technician can help interpret them; do not rely on a generic answer for every microcar.

Frequently asked questions

At what age can you get B1, and which quadricycles can you drive?

From age 16. B1 covers non-light quadricycles up to 400 kg unladen mass and 15 kW; for quadricycles designed to carry goods, the mass may reach 550 kg.

Is a microcar always a light quadricycle?

No. The commercial name and appearance are not enough: the approval shown in the documents determines its category.
