Licence categories
B96 licence: when is it enough for a car and trailer?
B96 extends category B for specific trailer combinations. Here is what to check.
Code 96 is required when a category B vehicle and trailer exceed 3,500 kg but do not exceed 4,250 kg maximum authorised mass. It is obtained by passing a specific practical test.
What code 96 means
Code 96 extends B to certain trailer combinations beyond ordinary B limits but within the extension’s threshold. It is not a separate category: it appears alongside B and other categories on your licence. A test must be passed under the current procedure. MIT guidance on BE also describes extension 96; check it before applying.
Do not calculate this by weighing an empty trailer or estimating the day’s load. Compare the towing vehicle’s and trailer’s maximum authorised masses in their documents against the current legal threshold. The towing vehicle must also be technically approved to tow that trailer. These are separate checks: the driver’s entitlement and the vehicle’s compatibility.
If the trailer exceeds 750 kg and the combination’s maximum authorised mass stays within 3,500 kg, B is sufficient. Between 3,500 and 4,250 kg, B with code 96 is required; above 4,250 kg, BE is required. Use the maximum authorised figures in the documents, not actual journey weight. Also comply with the car’s maximum towable mass and maximum combination mass.
- Add and compare the masses in the documents, not an estimated load.
- Check that code 96 appears on your licence.
- Check the towing vehicle’s capacity and the trailer’s limits.
B96 or BE
When a combination exceeds ordinary B scope, code 96 is sufficient only if it falls within the extension’s limits. A heavier combination may require BE. Use official figures, not intended use: caravans, garden trailers and livestock trailers follow the same mass-check method. Appearance and temporary load do not replace classification.
Write down the towing vehicle’s and trailer’s maximum authorised masses, then check the total against current legal thresholds. Finally, compare the towing vehicle’s maximum towable mass and axle loads. If you do not understand a code on a document or licence, ask the Motorizzazione or a driving school before setting off.

Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate whether I need B96?
Add the car’s maximum authorised mass to the trailer’s: up to 3,500 kg, B may suffice; above 3,500 and up to 4,250 kg, B with code 96 is required; above 4,250 kg, BE is required. Also check the car’s towing limits.
Does the actual load determine whether I need B96?
The category is assessed using maximum authorised masses and applicable rules. Check the documents and current threshold.
