Licence categories
Category C1 for a motorhome: when might you need it?
You may need C1 for a motorhome with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg. Check the current vehicle document.
Category C1 is required for motorhomes and other motor vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, provided they are not D1 or D passenger-transport vehicles. The minimum age is 18.
When you need C1 instead of B
A motorhome with a maximum authorised mass no higher than 3,500 kg will normally fall under category B if it also meets the other requirements. If its maximum authorised mass is over 3,500 kg and no more than 7,500 kg, C1 may be required. Above 7,500 kg, check category C. Vehicle classification and seat count also matter, so do not decide from mass or the word “motorhome” alone.
Check the current registration document: on harmonised European documents, field F.2 shows the maximum authorised mass. Do not substitute the actual weight at a weighbridge or the unladen mass. An empty vehicle can have F.2 above 3,500 kg and require C1; conversely, a vehicle permitted within the B limit may approach that limit during a trip but must not exceed it in use.
Category C1 is available from age 18 under the MIT procedure; do not confuse it with C1E, which is needed for some trailer combinations. If the motorhome tows a trailer, check the combination’s authorised masses and towing category separately. EU exceptions for certain alternatively fuelled vehicles have specific conditions: do not assume they apply to an electric or hybrid motorhome without checking the rules.
C1 allows a trailer up to 750 kg. If the combination requires a heavier trailer, check C1E and its maximum authorised mass. The motorhome’s actual weight on a particular trip does not change the licence category required, which is determined by maximum authorised mass.
- B: normally up to 3,500 kg maximum authorised mass.
- C1: over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg for vehicles covered by the category.
- C: above 7,500 kg, if the vehicle category requires it.
- A separate extension such as C1E or another category may be needed for a trailer.
What to check on the motorhome
Ask for the documents for the specific vehicle, especially if it has been converted or re-registered. Added accessories, structural changes or a change of use may have updated its mass and type-approval details. Sales brochures describe a model configuration; they do not replace the vehicle document for the motorhome you will drive.
Once you have chosen the licence category, keep the load within limits: passengers, water, luggage, bicycles and a motorbike carrier all reduce payload and may affect axle distribution. Follow the technical limits and manufacturer’s instructions.

Frequently asked questions
What licence do I need for a 4,000 kg motorhome?
C1, because its maximum authorised mass is over 3,500 kg and no more than 7,500 kg. With C1 you may tow a trailer up to 750 kg; check C1E for a heavier trailer.
Does a C1 motorhome always require C1E when towing a trailer?
No. It depends on the authorised masses and the combination. Check the documents for both vehicles and the rules for C1E.
