Code 97 on a C1 licence: what changes when using a truck?
Code 97 limits C1 to vehicles outside tachograph rules; it is not a CQC.
EU code 97 on a C1 licence restricts the holder to vehicles not subject to tachograph installation and use rules. The category remains C1, but the holder cannot drive a truck for which a tachograph is mandatory under that restriction. Code 97 does not replace or grant a CQC.
C1 with code 97 has a narrower scope
Category C1 covers vehicles with a maximum authorised mass over 3,500 kg and up to 7,500 kg, within its passenger limits. MIT also provides a C1 version with code 97: that restriction excludes vehicles subject to tachograph rules. It is not a mere administrative note; it narrows the vehicles you may drive with that category.
Tachograph requirements depend on the applicable European and national rules for the vehicle, transport and activity. Do not decide from mass alone or from the fact that the truck is used rarely. Check the vehicle classification, type of transport, any exemption and the entries on the licence. If a tachograph is required, C1 with code 97 does not cover that vehicle.
Do not confuse code 97 with CQC
Code 97 limits category C1. CQC is a separate professional qualification required for certain professional goods transport with vehicles for which C1/C and related categories are required. Having C1 without code 97 does not automatically exempt you from CQC. Conversely, a CQC does not remove code 97: the driving category and qualification must each match the vehicle and activity.
Check the C1 line on your licence and the truck’s documents. If your C1 has code 97 and the planned use is work-related, ask the employer or Motor Vehicle Office to assess the actual vehicle and task before departure. Do not rely only on experience with a similar truck; tachograph rules may vary with configuration or transport type.
Example
A C1 licence with code 97 may cover a C1 vehicle that is not subject to tachograph requirements. If a 6,000 kg truck is subject to those requirements, code 97 excludes it even though its mass falls within C1. For professional delivery work, separately check CQC and any applicable exemption.

Frequently asked questions
Does code 97 mean I do not have to use a tachograph in the truck?
No. It limits C1 to vehicles not subject to tachograph rules; it does not exempt a vehicle that is subject to them.
Can I do professional transport with C1 and code 97?
It depends on the vehicle and service. Check tachograph rules and CQC requirements separately.
