How do I obtain the goods CQC alongside a category C licence?

You can plan the category C licence and goods CQC together, but they are separate qualifications with their own requirements and exams. You may start the initial CQC course before holding C; before individual driving hours, however, you need the learner’s permit for the corresponding licence category.

The CQC course can start before the driving licence

Legislative Decree 286/2005 says you do not need to hold the corresponding driving licence to enrol in the initial CQC qualification course. This lets you coordinate the goods CQC with obtaining C instead of waiting for one title to be fully completed before starting the other. Category C authorises the heavy vehicle; the CQC certifies professional goods-transport qualification. Completing the course and CQC exam does not itself issue the C licence, which follows its own process.

There is a step that does require a driving authorisation. Before the programme’s individual driving hours, candidates must hold the learner’s permit required for the corresponding category—in this case the C foglio rosa. CQC theory can therefore come first, while individual driving practice follows the permit. The CQC route can also affect the minimum age for category C: MIT lists a route to C at 18 after completing an ordinary initial goods-CQC course and examination; without that route, the standard age threshold is higher.

For example, you may enrol in the initial goods-CQC course while preparing for the category C theory exam. After passing the C theory test and receiving the learner permit, you can complete the individual driving hours for CQC and proceed with the required practical tests. A driving school may coordinate the timetable, but completing one qualification does not replace the exam for the other.

Plan the two procedures without confusing them

Before enrolling, ask the driving school or authorised centre which initial CQC course you will take, which sessions are theory and when individual driving hours begin. Confirm which age conditions apply to your category C route. Keep the learner permit, course records and exam notices: the licence and CQC may be completed on different dates.
