Professional qualifications
Passenger CQC: what steps are needed to work as a bus driver?
Professional bus driving requires the right D/D1 licence and passenger CQC; the qualification involves an initial course and exam.
To drive a bus professionally, you need the licence category for the vehicle (D or D1, with any required extension) and the passenger CQC. CQC is a separate qualification obtained through an initial course and examination; it does not replace the driving licence or the company’s service authorisation.
Separate the driving licence, CQC and service
Category D covers buses designed to carry more than eight passengers besides the driver; D1 covers vehicles with up to 16 passenger seats besides the driver and a maximum length of 8 metres. The vehicle’s recorded data determines the category, not simply calling it a “bus”. For professional passenger transport in vehicles requiring the listed categories, MIT requires the passenger CQC, subject to statutory exemptions.
The CQC is obtained through an initial course and an examination at the Motorizzazione. It is separate from category D or D1: passing the CQC exam does not issue the driving category if you do not already hold it. Age and service type can affect eligibility: the decree links some professional routes to age bands and to conditions for specific line services. Do not infer professional driving entitlement from a learner permit or course enrolment alone.
For example, to start work driving a line bus with more than eight passenger seats, check category D or the required category, a valid passenger CQC and the conditions for that service. A vehicle with up to 16 passenger seats and a length within 8 metres may fall under D1, but check its registration document. The operator’s service authorisation and contract are separate company matters, not part of the driver’s licence or CQC.
Sequence the qualification route
Identify the vehicle category, then ask an authorised driving school which initial passenger-CQC course applies and when individual driving hours can begin. Those hours require the learner permit for the corresponding licence category. After the course, book the CQC exam; the licence and CQC can have different applications and dates, so keep the records and check each expiry separately.

Frequently asked questions
Is a D licence enough to work as a bus driver?
Professional passenger transport generally also requires the passenger CQC, subject to exemptions. Check the vehicle category and service type.
Can I start the passenger-CQC course before I get D?
You can enrol in the initial course without already holding the corresponding licence, but individual driving hours require the learner permit for that category.
