Driving licences and disability: how vehicle adaptations are recorded

Driving adaptations are determined after a medical and legal assessment and recorded on the licence using specific codes and restrictions.

For a person whose disability affects driving, the local medical commission assesses fitness to drive and any adaptations needed. Restrictions may be recorded on the licence using EU codes and must match the vehicle used.

From assessment to vehicle adaptations

If a physical condition requires vehicle modifications, the local medical commission (CML) assesses the case under the Highway Code. It may set conditions for the driver or specify adaptations, such as devices that allow the controls to be operated in a way suited to the person’s assessed abilities. The driver or equipment seller cannot choose the solution alone: it must follow the medical and legal prescription.

The licence may show EU or national codes identifying restrictions and adaptations. They describe specific conditions, such as using an automatic gearbox or modified controls; they are not general labels about the person. Before buying a vehicle or fitting a device, compare the code with the adaptation specification and ask the Motorizzazione or a recognised specialist centre to confirm.

If fitness to drive cannot be determined by clinical examination alone, the rules provide for a practical test in a vehicle adapted to the person’s needs. This checks that the system can be used safely; it is not a standard test identical for everyone. Restrictions may apply to the licence category, its validity or the vehicles the holder may drive.

  • Book an assessment with the competent CML.
  • Ask for an up-to-date list of medical documents and any tests required.
  • Check what a licence code means before choosing or modifying a vehicle.
  • Use only a vehicle that complies with the prescribed and approved adaptations.

After the licence is issued

Before driving, check that the installed adaptations match the prescriptions exactly and that the modification has been recorded and inspected under the required procedure. If the vehicle changes or you want to replace a control, ask whether you need a new assessment or updated documents. Do not drive a non-compliant vehicle based on personal experience alone.

For a review or renewal, follow the deadlines and take the required documents to the commission. If the decision sets a time limit, book the appointment early and ask the office whether any temporary permits apply to your case.

For driving theory,Quiz Patente Ufficiale offers chapters, timed quizzes and error review; choosing adaptations requires an assessment by the local medical commission.

Frequently asked questions

Can I fit an adaptation that differs from the one on my licence?

Do not drive with a different setup until you have checked the procedure. The adaptation must match the prescription and the Motorizzazione’s checks.

Can the commission ask me to take a practical test?

Yes. If fitness to drive cannot be assessed through clinical examinations alone, the law provides for a test in a vehicle adapted to the identified needs.
